Program Details

Surf & Kitesurf Setup

High quality lessons and rentals, perfect for families

We work with local shops that have 5 star ratings in safety and gear quality, so you can book assured that your family will have a blast learning the ways of the wind and waves, stress free. Also, if you already shred, you can count on this gear to suit your needs: no beater gear.
Your package here includes three half days of gear rentals or lessons (surf, kitesurf, SUP or windsurf) transport to and from the lesson included (see section on transport below). Depending on your interest (wind or surf), lessons and rental will either be at Encuentro beach (for surf) or Cabarete beach (for kitesurf, windsurf and SUP)
What if we want to check out some other breaks? Just let us know! We can set up surf and kite excursions as far west as Buen Hombre (near Monte Cristi) and as far east as Playa Bonita in Las Terrenas.

Easy, Safe & Reliable Transportation

Get where you need to go safely & learn about the community in the process

No need to stress about renting a vehicle or driving on unknown roads with “unique” driving conditions. Our drivers have flawless safety records, speak fluent English, and, most importantly, are awesome people who can show you a new side to their community. All of their vehicles are inspected and are in tip-top shape. Your driver will welcome you at the airport, drive you to your accommodation, provide your family two local rides /day (to and from your volunteer site or activities for example) and drop you off at the end of your stay.

Cultural Immersion

Provide your family a local perspective

Your package includes an excursion designed to give your family a glimpse behind the curtain of local culture. You will be able to learn about history, get a sense for the pulse of local culture and become enmeshed in your community.

You can choose from one of the following options:
·         The Dominican Coffee Experience: Visit a local coffee farm and get your hands dirty! You will pick coffee, check out coffee dryers, grind coffee yourself, and, of course, enjoy a cup! On this excursion you will learn about the environmental, economic and social aspects of coffee farming in the DR.
OR

·         Mangrove Tour and Dominican Fisheries: Take a boat tour of a mangrove forest. Snorkel in a shallow sea-pool. Learn about interesting local species that abound in this ecotone and how fisherman strive to manage a sustainable fishery.

Thoughtful Accommodations

Comfort, Good standing in the local community & Great Value

Stay in a beautiful apartment-hotel with a kitchen, couch, bathroom, potable hot and cold water, private terrace with hammock, 24-hour electricity, and optional air-conditioning. Each apartment has space for 4 + people. Some of the rooms have bunk beds for bigger groups. Our facilities include a swimming pool in the large, tropical garden, a BBQ grill, yoga platform and a free high speed internet connection.

Educational Visit to local Nonprofit

An opportunity to learn about and contribute to this community

Your package includes an educational visit with one of our local non-profit partners. This visit is designed to give your family a deeper understanding of the place you’re visiting, by learning  about the state of local education, environment and economy through the lens of locally embedded nonprofit or community organization.  Most of our partner organizations work in general youth and family support, and are similar to organizations like the Boys and Girls club, which you might be familiar with from the U.S. These organizations are providing safe spaces for local youth to participate in afterschool programs such as homework help, English language learning, sports and healthy living. Volunteer opportunities with our partner organizations are available on a case by case basis. If this is something that your family is interested in, in addition to your educational visit, please let us know ahead of time.

Likely projects for your family would  include English language tutoring, painting and general maintenance of the educational facilities or whatever the immediate priority of our partner organization is.
.
We work hard to maintain strong relationships with our nonprofit partners. We ask that you approach this educational visit with respect, humility and good listening skills!

Your program fee includes the cost of staffing for your family’s educational visit AND a small grant that goes directly to project sustainability.

Adventurous Extras

Want more Awesome Activities? Here you go...

Want to include an experience that your family will be talking about for years to come? Add one of these unique local excursions. Your family is sure to grow closer together, as you challenge each other to embrace adventure and a new perspective.
·         River boat and fresh seafood dinner on the Yassica River
You will depart your lodge at 4:30pm and depart for Sabaneta de Yassica, a fifteen-minute ride east of Cabarete. There you will board a river boat ride along the lush green banks of the Yassica river, where local kite-boarders practice their flatwater skills. Dinner includes local fish, tostones (friend plantains), amazing shrimp, chicken and your choice of presidente beer or a cuba- libre (virgin pina coladas available for the kids, of course). This has to be one of the most amazing spots in the DR to enjoy a sunset.
·         Snorkel excursion in sosua
Snorkel on the reef at sosua beach with a marine naturalist. Practice your snorkeling skills in turquoise water, navigate the reef and learn to identify a handful of local marine species.
·         Cabarete caves
Explore the caves in the foothills behind Cabarete. Your guide will explain the local geological, cultural and historical significance of the caves. You will also have the opportunity to dive into the transparent, cool waters inside of the caves.
·         Mountain bike the rural hills
Explore the local landscape and visit a few communities as you bike along the coastline and into the hills above Cabarete.
