Safety is our number one priority. Our goal at Wavetrekker is to help families grow through exposure to foreign culture, participation in healthy outdoor adventure sports- like surfing and hiking-, and exploration of the issues that underpin our global community. The bedrock, though, of our approach is a firm commitment to providing experiences that are safe and appropriate for families of all backgrounds. Our hope is that with the peace of mind that comes with this commitment to safety, you can encourage your family to get outside of their comfort zones and meet the world.
After safety, our second biggest priority is for your family to have a great time. Sure, you’re going to have new experiences and gain a new perspective; the exciting piece is that while this happening your whole crew will be grinning ear to ear. If you thought a week of only sitting in the sand was fun, try a week of hiking, visiting local markets, learning to surf, meeting new people, and expanding your horizons AND sitting in the sand when you feel like it! Because Wavetrekker gives you the control to decide on the balance your trip between activities, free time to explore and space for relaxation.
For us, a week’s worth of travel should include the right balance of physical and mental challenges. As far as physical challenges, we mean participation in activities that will give your family an opportunity for visceral exposure to the natural landscape of the place your traveling to- this could be a mountain bike through a forest, kitesurfing lessons on an iconic beach, a rigorous walk through a colonial city or snorkeling on a tropical reef. We believe the physically experiencing a place is an important part of getting to know it. Wavetrekker also challenges your family to expand your horizons and perspective on how the world works. We approach this by giving you the opportunity to explore the undercurrents of realities- be they environmental, economic or education related. Our hallmark program aimed at expanding traveler’s perspectives is elaborated on below in the “Partnership” section.
Wavetrekker takes the stance that if you are traveling to a foreign country, even if your intention is to simply decompress, you should still learn a thing or two about the culture you are visiting. All-inclusive resorts are a great way to escape reality. They are not a great option if you want authenticity or real local food. Wavetrekker programs give you the option for authentic engagement with local culture in addition to rest and relaxation. The thing about authenticity is that it cannot be 100% planned- if it were then it would be a farce. Wavetrekker opens the door for your family to have your own, personal experiences with local culture, then it’s up to you to step through it.
We offer a number of activities that will expose your family to the state of the environment, economy and education in the destination where your traveling, but our signature program is our Community Partnership Program. In this program, Wavetrekker pairs your family with a local non-profit organization that is embedded in the local community. Your family will be tasked with visiting the non-profit, interviewing their staff, observing their operation and capturing their story to bring home to your friends, colleagues, and schoolmates. Our non-profit partners view families traveling with Wavetrekker as future allies and welcome you in with the hopes that you will spread the story of their work and help to promote their efforts within your network. The Wavetrekker App guides your family through this process.
